Pharmacokinetics

Nicotine is absorbed through mucous membranes in a highly pH-dependent fashion. The t'/2 is 2 h. It is largely metabolised to inert substances, e.g. cotinine, though some is excreted unchanged in the urine (pH dependent, it is un-ionised at acid pH). Cotinine is used as a marker for nicotine intake in smoking surveys because of its convenient t1/, (20 h).
