Available progestogens (some used only in combined formulations) include:
• oral: norethisterone, dydrogesterone, gestodene, desogestrel, levonorgestrel, megestrol, medroxyprogesterone
• suppositories or pessaries: progesterone
• injectable: progesterone, hydroxyprogesterone, medroxyprogesterone.
Adverse effects of prolonged use include virilis-ation (see above), raised blood pressure and adverse trend in blood lipids. Gestodene, desogestrel and norgestimate may have less affinity for androgen receptors and therefore less unfavourable effect on blood lipids; however the first two of these may have a higher risk of thrombosis.
