Use of Membranes

Membranes with a low molecular weight cut-off can be used to remove proteins and other large molecules. However, salts that can interfere in the separation remain in the filtrate. Membrane filters are also relatively expensive, and can require a long time to filter the serum. As an example, the membrane filters have been used in the analysis of serum nitrate by CE (16). Membrane filtration to remove protein bound drugs can also be used to separate free drugs for further analysis by CE (17) (see Fig. 2).
