Followup

The follow-up of ALL patients is intended to measure the duration of survival or remission. As in AML'1 four different categories are used: overall survival' relapse-free survival' event-free survival' and remission duration. The main reason to have an assortment of definitions is to handle the possibility of competing events. For example' there can be two competing events for survival: relapsed disease or massive myocardial infarction. Even though both are fatal' only one counts toward ALL treatment outcome.8081 In another manner' the massive myocardial infarction may have precluded ALL relapse from occurring.
