Although multiple myeloma (MM) is classified under the heading of indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, the pathophysiologic mechanisms of this disease often cause significant morbidity. Long-term survival rates for patients with MM have consistently improved over the last 30 years.1 Thus, managing the acute and chronic complications of this disease can be challenging. This chapter will review the basic mechanisms of target organ complications of MM and provide a summary of literature-based recommendations for managing such complications.
