Peripheral Blood Versus Bone Marrow As A Source Of Stem Cells

The use of G-CSF mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) has been associated with improved outcome compared to marrow. A retrospective analysis of the EBMT data of 234 patients with a diagnosis of MDS undergoing an HLA identical sibling transplant showed an improved 2-year survival of 50% with PBSC versus 39% with bone marrow and also reduced TRM and relapses.33 Similar reduced relapse risk and improved overall outcome was also noted in the studies published by Deeg et al.8 and Canizo et al.34
