Primary Cerebral Lymphoma

Primary CNS lymphoma (PCL) is defined as an NHL

that is confined to the craniospinal axis without systemic involvement. This diagnosis is rare in immunocompetent patients but occurs more frequently in patients with both congenital and acquired immunodeficiency. AIDS-related PCL occurs equally frequently across all ages and transmission risk groups, and the tumors are high-grade B-cell diffuse large cell or immunoblastic NHLs. The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a universal feature of HIV-associated PCL but EBV is not found in other PCLs.86 87 EBV may be detected by immunocytochemical staining of biopsy tissue or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of CSF using EBV-specific oligonucleotide primers.
