As displayed in Table 10.4, results showed that neither morphosyntactic skill (as measured by MLU and IPSyn), nor vocabulary skill (as measured by the CDI) at 20- and 32- months-old was associated with narrative performance at 5-years-old. Thus, these measures of general language ability do not appear to help explain variability in children's later narrative development. Most of the pragmatic measures, however, were positively correlated with PN and/or FAN and, thus, invited us to further explore their predictive power. Because gender was associated with FAN, we also decided to explore its effect more closely.
