Perceptual Organization

For purposes of this chapter, perceptual organization and categorization will be discussed in two sections: The first will consider a possible early stage of visual processing in which shapes and objects are extracted from a visual scene, and the second will consider a presumed later phase in which shapes and objects are categorized, that is, recognized as members of particular groups (see Farah, 1990, and Trick & Enns, 1997, for similar frameworks; but see Peterson, 1994, for an alternative view). A transitional section of the chapter will highlight the interaction of the processes of perceptual organization and categorization.
