Table 613

Correlation Coefficients among Root Characters in Jeongsun and Mishima Cultivars (above diagonal: Mishima; below diagonal: Jeongsun)

Characters Root Weight Root Length No. of Lateral Roots Root Diameter

Characters Root Weight Root Length No. of Lateral Roots Root Diameter side roots did not show a significant correlation coefficient in the Mishima population. However, there was no significant correlation coefficient in the root length and number of side roots in the case of both populations (Table 6.13). The correlation coefficients of underground and aboveground characters such as plant height, leaf area, and leaf weight were highly significant with root weight in Jeongsun. The Mishima cultivar also had a highly significant correlation in the number of branches, leaf area, and leaf weight with root weight, respectively (Table 6.14). The growth characters of aboveground organs have a highly significant correlation with root characters in both populations. With these results, an excellent breeding material could be selected with broad leaf, thick stem, multiple branches, and the required root characters.
