Chest Xray

A chest radiograph should be obtained shortly (< 1 hr) after the patient arrives in the CTU. The purpose of this film is to ascertain the position of all intrathoracic tubes (CVP, LA, Swan-Ganz catheter, endotracheal tube, chest tubes, nasogastric tube). It also gives information about the presence of air and blood in the mediastinum and pleural spaces. It is a baseline of heart size and hence the appropriate x-ray settings and distance used to shoot these films should be written at the foot of each bed and all subsequent x-rays done using the same technique.
