Foley catheter

All patients return with a Foley catheter in place. It is the resident's responsibility to ensure that this system is draining adequately. The Foley catheter itself should be connected to a urinometer measuring system so that accurate hourly urine output can be obtained. Remember, urine output is a very sensitive indicator of cardiac output. In addition, hourly specific gravity should be obtained to further aid in management. The Foley catheter system is a closed sterile system

and therefore should not be opened under any circumstances. Catheters which are not functioning appropriately should be removed and replaced with an entirely new system.
