General principles

All cardiac patients return to the CTU on a ventilator. Their parameters are:

2) tidal volume between 10-15 cc/kg,

3) rate of between 10-14 breaths/min,

4) PEEP of between 2-8 mmHg.

The respiratory adjustments are then made based upon:

1) a clinical assessment of the patient and

2) the arterial blood gas analysis

Postop cardiac patients are usually extubated between 4-24 hours postop.
