Pacemaker wires

A majority of our patients return with several pacemaker wires in place. These wires are carefully positioned so that the ventricular leads are to the patient's left and the atrial leads to his right. Ground leads can be identified by the wiring to the skin. Residents must be familiar with the positions of these leads on each patient and know how to connect them to the appropriate generator box if the situation is called for. Patients who return from the operating room where evidence of heart

block and/or bradycardiac rhythms occurred should be left attached to the pacer generator with a demand mode backup.
