The consent of a parent or guardian is not required. For those under 16 years of age the House of Lords decided (18) that valid consent could be given by minors, provided that they understood the issues. The case concerned the provision of contraceptive advice to girls younger than 16 years in circumstances in which a parent objected. The House of Lords held that parental rights to determine whether a child younger than 16 years received treatment terminated if and when the child achieved a sufficient understanding and intelligence to enable him or her to comprehend the issues involved.
