Forensic Samples

Samples from a detainee, such as dental impressions, blood, saliva, urine, hair, fingernail scrapings and cuttings, and swabs (e.g., mouth or penile), may be requested by police authorities in connection with the investigation of an offense. These samples should only be taken by a doctor or nurse for evidential purposes with the detainee's fully informed consent and should be packaged in accordance with local procedures to ensure the chain of evidence. For further details regarding samples, see Chapter 3.
