In general, data should be made anonymous. Every reasonable effort must be made to inform the concerned patients and to obtain their permission to disclose or publish case histories, photographs, and other information. Where consent cannot be obtained, the matter should be referred to a research ethics committee for guidance. The GMC and similar bodies give guidance (8,23), and reputable medical journals have strict codes of practice, requiring that appropriate consent be obtained before even anonymous data are published, but the topic is not discussed in this chapter.
