Demyelinating Diseases

Diseases with Autoimmune Pathogenesis Diseases with Probable Autoimmune Pathogenesis

The primary degeneration of central nervous system (CNS) myelin characterizes a heterogenous group of diseases (Table 8.1). Important diseases, affecting chiefly young adults, are immunemediated; others, affecting chiefly children, are inherited; and still others are caused by viruses, metabolic disorders, toxins, and blood-vessel diseases. The immune-mediated diseases are presented here. Diseases with other etiologies are covered in other chapters.
