Rasmussens Encephalitis

A rare inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, it affects young individuals. Seizures and slowly progressive neurologic deterioration are major clinical features. The pathology is distinguished by a well-demarcated inflammatory process, localized to one cerebral hemisphere. It consists of perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrations, chiefly with T cells, focal and diffuse microglial reactions, and astrocytic gliosis. Neuronal losses, spongy degeneration, and even cavitations may add to the picture.
