The heart rate of infants and children is quite variable. It is more sensitive to the effects of illness, exercise, and emotion than that of adults. Average heart rates are shown in the table below:

A pulse rate that is too rapid to count (usually >180-200/min) usually indicates paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.
