■ Findings are greatly affected by factors:
Internal: alertness, timing with respect to feeding and sleeping External: presence of parents, fearful stimuli
■ Neurologic changes often present as developmental abnormalities.
■ Neurologic and developmental examinations often are combined.
It is important to note that while many neurologic abnormalities in adults produce asymmetric localized findings, neurologic abnormalities in infants and young children often present as developmental abnormalities, such as failure to do age-appropriate tasks. Therefore, the neurologic and developmental examinations need to proceed hand in hand. Finding a developmental abnormality should prompt you to pay particular attention to the neurologic examination.
