Hepatic Encephalopathy

Reye's syndrome is a metabolic disorder associated with fatty deposits in the liver and impaired production of urea through the ornithine cycle, causing encephalopathy. Figure 7-7 depicts the ornithine cycle. Reye's syndrome is more frequently associated with viral disease of children, especially when treated with medications such as salicylates. When plasma ammonia levels exceed five times the normal level, Reyes's syndrome is often fatal. Elevation of hepatic enzymes such as AST and ALT is also associated with Reye's syndrome.19-21 The common methodology for testing ammonia is found in Test Methodology 7-9.
