Hemolysis Why Is the Potassium Level So High Today

A physician called the laboratory to inquiry about a specimen collected from his patient. The plasma potassium concentration had been reported as 5.9 mmol/L. This value was abnormally high when compared to the reference range (3.5 to 4.5 mmol/L) for potassium. The physician was concerned that hemolysis had falsely elevated the potassium result.
