Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG): Glycoprotein produced by syn-cytiotrophoblasts, which is assayed in the standard pregnancy test.
Threshold hCG level: Serum level of hCG at which a pregnancy should be seen on ultrasound examination. When the hCG level exceeds the threshold and no pregnancy is seen on ultrasound, there is a high likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy.
